Are
you bored with Saint Barths? Have you visited every European
city? Not yet ready to tackle Mt. Everest? Then why not opt for
adventures tempered with a certain amount of comfort and security.
Adventure travel, a $200 billion dollar industry, and projected
to continually grow, is now offering and attracting a more cultured-oriented
experience and traveler.
Vacation
voyages that chart a course to the bottom of the ocean, the
top of the world and anywhere in between are becoming the new
luxury travel destinations. Planning vacations to achieve more
than just relaxation, allowing self discovery and getting in
touch with nature, have made adventure travel increasingly popular
over the past few years. Now the desire to also gain knowledge
has come into play and expedition travel is the direction vacationers
are taking.
A well
kept secret is the Explorers Club, who's popular travel program
open to non members, encompasses all of these attributes and
more. In comfort, the search for relaxation, adventure, nature
and knowledge are all found on the Explorers Club Traveler program
expeditions. This non profit group, established in 1905 awards
scholarships to future explorers and is dedicated to the ideal
that it is vital to preserve the instinct to explore.
 The
growing interest in exploration has also been navigating its
way into the books we read and the movies that we will watch.
Dr. Caroline Alexander, a member of the Explorers Club is the
author of Endurance. About a grueling Antarctic expedition,
this book has been on the New York Times best sellers
list, is featured in an exhibit at the American Museum of Natural
History and is slated to be the film industry's next Titanic.
Since the
Explorers Club established their "Travelers" program
in 1995, the amount of excursions and participants have more
than quadrupled. The Explorers Club has access to the very limited
ships, submersibles and other necessities to make these explorations
happen. Also the worlds most renowned scientists and lecturers
are members of the club and are the leaders for the expeditions.
Among them is Dr. Alexander, the author of Endurance who
will be leading an expedition to South Georgia Island, tracing
the path of the legendary expedition. Another up and coming noteworthy
expedition includes the first opportunity for non-scientists
to visit the Titanic wreckage. The Explorers Club was
critical in stopping the historical wreckage from becoming private
property and a victim of salvaging.
